A simple example is the use of Hexagonal  stock material purely for obtaining flats for a spanner. With multi axis lathes with milling capacity two flats can be quickly milled to provide that facility, in the right position and the right AF size.

Orientation of cross operations can also be aligned accurately to flats of  a hex profile.

In some cases where two parts were necessary, it has been found that the machine capabilities allow these two parts to made as one.
